3 Ways to Keep Your Child’s Bedroom Clean

You’re the parent, and it’s fallen (unfortunately) into your hands to keep your kid’s bedroom clean. How do you do it, when it seems to explode into a mess as soon as you’re done?

Bedrooms are notoriously messy; a trend that only continues into late teen hood.  And don’t bother trying to instill cleaning tips to your young adult for their first apartment.  But you’re the parent, and it’s fallen (unfortunately) into your hands to keep your kid’s bedroom clean.  How do you do it, when it seems to explode into a mess as soon as you’re done?  Well, following these tips could help.

  1. Ask your child what to do.

Yes, parents always know best.  But kids are the ones residing in the room, and they’re the ones who are going to use it every day.  There’s a good chance there are aspects of the room you don’t notice as an adult.  Perhaps a drawer is harder to open for the child, and so they don’t like to put things away.  Maybe they don’t understand the value of organizational skills quite yet, as they’re too young.  Giving them these skills and teaching them how to keep clean is a great life lesson you can present them with.

  1. Simplify your storage.

Start with clothes.  You don’t need all those winter clothes during the summer taking up space in your child’s closet or dresser.  It frees up a lot of space to get rid of clothes they don’t wear.  You should look through every few weeks and donate the clothes your child doesn’t wear anymore.  Also, start to do the same with toys.  Look at what your child is using everyday, or frequently, and take away the toys they aren’t playing with.  This will successfully declutter a room, especially a small one that a child will reside in.

  1. Use lots of labels.

Clear, easily-readable labels are going to make a huge difference.  For you, this makes it easy to figure out where messes need to be put away.  For the child, they’ll be encouraged to put things away when they know where everything goes.  A reward system is always a great way to encourage cleaning, too–say, their room is clean every day at the end of the day for a week, and they’ll get a small prize.
