What to Look For During an Apartment Inspection: Part 2

Apartment

Part two of what you should look for when inspecting an apartment!

Last week we covered some of the things you need to look out for when conducting an apartment inspection and this week we’re here to offer even more areas that are worth your consideration. Making sure you’re doing all you need to when performing an apartment inspection not only keeps you from enduring future headaches, but your landlord as well. Here are a few more areas you’ll want to be informed about when taking a look at your apartment.

Bathrooms

When inspecting the bathrooms, be sure to turn on the shower. Make sure water flows and that both hot and cold water are available from the tap. If it looks unclear or like there may be sediment present, that’s definitely a concern.

Toilets ought to be clean and flush properly without giving you any trouble. Check the surrounding area of the toilet to see if there are any leaks or noticeable signs of water damage, as this could be a huge problem in the future. You’ll want to do the same for any sinks in the bathrooms—be sure that there is hot and cold water from the faucet, that the drain works, and that there aren’t any noticeable signs of water damage around the sink.

Kitchen

There’s a lot that could potentially go wrong with your apartment’s kitchen which is a big deal considering for many families, it’s really the heart of their home. You need to make sure it’s the right space not only to prepare your meals but to spend time in.

Make sure that your stove is in working condition. Check that every switch works, the burners get hot when you turn them on, and that there’s no frayed or damaged wiring if it’s an electrical oven. If your unit has a gas stove, make sure it ignites properly and sniff around for the smell of natural gas when it’s on.

The refrigerator is also a common problem area so be sure that it’s actually cold. Look for any mold that may be left by former apartment renters and that there’s no leftover food. Your refrigerator should be spotless and clean both when you move in and when you move out.
