Tips for Cleaning Your Apartment and Getting Your Deposit Back

Apartment

If you want your deposit back, it’s important to do everything you can to get your apartment back into pristine condition.

When moving out of your apartment, getting your deposit back is a big deal. The goal is to make the space look just like it did when you moved in. Hopefully there isn’t any major damage and you can work with your landlord in getting your deposit back, but you’ll also want to make sure you take the time to adequately clean the apartment and get it looking as close to perfect as possible.

Top to Bottom

When cleaning, dust ends up settling when disturbed so it’s a good idea to start from the top and then go to the bottom. Wipe down all of your ceiling light fixtures, get those cobwebs off of corners, and make sure any marks are removed from walls. After that, move on to doors and windows and give those a one over. Now, move down to baseboards and make sure you get any of the dust that may have trickled down. When cleaning carpets, utilizing a professional cleaning service is advisable if there are any visible stains, as this is one of the most common reasons renters get charged when moving out.

Forgotten Areas

Be sure to get areas that are often left forgotten about in apartment rentals, like the window blinds. If you’re having trouble cleaning them, try putting an old sock on your hand to wipe down any tricky surfaces. Make sure to get all the nooks and crannies of storage closets as well, as those are sometimes overlooked in apartment rentals and can accumulate a good deal of dust.

Taking Care of the Bathroom

Bathrooms often require a bit more attention. Again, start from the top and go down—make sure you hit any exhaust fans that may be in the room as well as these are dust magnets. Clean any fixtures, the mirror, and the insides of any cabinets.

Tackling Your Kitchen

Kitchens are usually the most time-consuming spaces to clean. This is because there are so many nooks and crannies that have all been in use for the duration of your lease in your apartment. Take extra care to make sure your oven, stove, and refrigerator are all cleaned adequately. Wipe down all the floors in your home as well and you should be good to go and get your deposit back.
