Is your apartment home to a four-legged friend? In honor of springtime, are you thinking about making your apartment home to a new plant as well? If so, you should be aware of the types of plants that are toxic to your pets so you can avoid keeping them in your apartment. The Apartments of Wildewood is here to help with apartment pet safety. Our Pet Policy

Before we get into the specifics of plants that are toxic to animals, here is our pet policy in case you were unaware of it: “Pet Owners Must provide current shot record for your pet(s), county registration, and a recent photo. Please note that The Apartments of Wildewood does have strict policies regarding breeds allowed on the property as well as weight restrictions. There is a $250.00 pet fee as well as $25.00 per month for pet rent.”

Lily (Lilium) Plant

If you have a cat, you should not have lilies in your apartment. Lilies are known for their fragrant bloom and appealing color, but they present serious dangers to animals. The entire lily plant is toxic to cats if ingested. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, lack of appetite, increased salivation, kidney failure, and death. If you receive a bouquet of flowers, be sure to remove any lilies.

Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia) Plant

Dieffenbachia, also known as Dumb Cane, can make your pets incredibly sick if they ingest this plant. Signs of ingestion are increased salivation and swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat. This plant could also be dangerous around young children.

Elephant Ear (Caladium) Plant

Caladium, also known as elephant ear, is made of large, arrow shaped leaves. This plant is found both indoor and outdoor (so keep an eye out for it when walking your dog) and is toxic to animals. Signs of ingestion are loss of appetite, drooling, oral pain, vomiting, pawing at mouth, and difficulty breathing. Keep your pets safe by keeping this plant out of your apartment.
