Making Your Apartment or Townhouse Perfect For Your Pet

Townhouse

When planning to rent a townhouse or apartment, be sure it’s right for your pet as well!

Your pet isn’t just a pet, it’s also part of the family. Whether you’ve got your own pooch or a kitten is on its way, you want to make sure your apartment or townhouse is perfect for your pet. There are pros and cons to each, with a townhouse usually affording your pet more space and perhaps even a backyard to run around in. That doesn’t mean that owning a pet in an apartment is impossible though, just a bit more difficult. Read on to find out more about owning a pet in a townhouse or apartment.

Figuring Out the Area

If you have a dog, you’ll want to take a walk around the neighborhood together when you first move in. You want your dog to get a sense for the area but you also need to figure out where are the best walking routes or good patches of grass for your dog to play in. You’ll also want to make sure that your pet isn’t going to be forced to interact with other pets–for example, if your dog doesn’t like other dogs, a townhouse may be a better option for you so you don’t run the risk of your dog bumping into a neighbor’s dog. If you have an outdoor cat, you may want to choose a first floor apartment so you can let your pet out easily.

Awareness of Cleanliness

Cleaning up after your pet and keeping your space sanitary is incredibly important. There’s a reason a lot of places have a one time or monthly pet fee–it’s meant to cover the damages that your pet could cause. It’s important to also consider how you treat the outdoor space. If you take your dog on a walk, be sure to clean up afterward as you don’t want to be a bother to your neighbors. If you have a townhouse, letting your dog use the backyard may be an easy option for busy pet owners.

Knowing Your Breed

You need to keep in mind what is best for your breed of pet. The larger the dog, the more space you need, which is why a townhouse might be a better option for dog owners. Small dogs could be okay in apartments, but they may still need to be walked regularly to burn off their extra energy. Be sure you have adequate space for your pet, as it can lead to unhappy living conditions if they aren’t granted enough room to roam!
