Fourth of July in St. Mary’s County

fourth of julyThis Friday marks 238 years of independence for the United States of America. Though we’re still considered a young country, we’re also considered to be a great one and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate our freedom and independence on this special day every year. Since the Fourth falls on a weekend this year, there’s lots to do in St. Mary’s County as well as the surrounding counties in Southern Maryland if you know where to look. We’ve taken the hard work out of it for you and found some of the best spots to watch fireworks and enjoy some American music in the area.

Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department – Since the Fourth is on a Friday this year, many organizations are taking the opportunity to celebrate all weekend. There will be an all day party at the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, July 5th. Fireworks start at dusk, but there will be a Carnival, food, and games for adults and children alike to indulge in for the day. There will be live music from 6-10. Bring a few dollars with you for $5 all night rides and $5 parking. Can’t beat that!

St. Mary’s College River Concert Series – Have you always been a fan of big band music? The Chesapeake Orchestra will be playing at the River Concert Series on July 4th starting at 7 PM. There will be food vendors, but you’re also welcome to bring a blanket and a picnic basket to sprawl out, listen to some great renditions of big band music, and enjoy a relaxing evening on the Townhouse Green at St. Mary’s College. Try to get there early to make sure you get a good spot on the grass and can easily see the great fireworks display that will take place at dusk.

Chesapeake Beach Fireworks – If you’re willing to go a little bit out of your way and heat to Calvert County, you can check out the Chesapeake Beach Fireworks on Thursday, July 3rd at dusk. There’s plenty to do in the area during the day if you choose to show up early and get a good spot. Check out the beaches, local restaurants, and enjoy the summer weather. The fireworks display will start at dusk and promises to be one of the best ones in Southern Maryland.
