4 Tips for Long Distance Apartment Searches

Apartment

Searching for a new apartment in a far away state or even country can be difficult if you’re unaware of the basics.

If you’ve found an opportunity on the other side of the country or are even looking at a new place in a different country altogether, you may be overwhelmed by the prospect of finding a new apartment. Finding housing can be difficult if you’re unfamiliar with the area and don’t know which neighborhoods are right for you. The good news is, we have some great tips for conducting a long distance apartment search.

1. Do Research Into an Area

Before narrowing down an apartment, you want to narrow down the right area first. Figure out what neighborhoods work for your budget and where you can get the best bang for your buck. You also want to consider your proximity to wherever your new job is going to be, as travel times are massively important to most of us. Remember to check out the distance of things like grocery stores, gas stations, or maybe even schools. You want your apartment to be in close proximity to all the necessities.

2. Try to Visit In Person—Or Find Someone Who Can

It’s ideal to go check the area out in person as this will give you the best understanding of what an area is truly like, but if that’s not possible, reach into your pocket of contacts and see if you know anyone who is already local to that area. They might be able to check the neighborhood out for you, let you know what areas might be better, and answer questions that only a local would know.

3. Work With a Leasing Agent Closely

At the end of the day, a leasing office or landlord’s ultimate goal is to rent out their space. That means they can be pretty accomodating to whatever your specific needs may be. If you need extra photos, ask for them. If you want to know what floor plans are available, shoot an email. In some cases, you may even be able to get a virtual tour or video tour set up so you can get a better idea of what the space looks like.

4. Consider Flexibility

The moving process can be fraught with headaches and problems when moving over long distances. You may just be unable to get the right apartment for you and that’s okay. There is an alternative though; if you’re unsure as to whether or not you will get the ideal apartment, consider subletting or just getting a shorter term lease. This keeps your options open if you do end up wanting to move sometime sooner rather than later.
