Keeping yourself informed about what’s true and what isn’t will help you to make a better decision when it comes to whether or not you should be living in an apartment.

So, you’re thinking of moving into a new apartment–are any of the following myths giving you second thoughts?  Apartment living gets a bad reputation because of a lot of common misconceptions.  Keeping yourself informed about what’s true and what isn’t will help you to make a better decision when it comes to whether or not you should be living in an apartment.  Check over these myths and make sure you know the truth!

Myth #1: Crime is worse in apartment complexes.

Actually, the opposite is true.  Apartments have a low rate of crime because they have many security measures in place to keep them safe.  There may be a sophisticated lock system, or a neighborhood security patrol.  Some apartments are even gated.  Regardless, your apartment is by no means unsafe.  Whether it’s reinforced locks or an intercom system, apartments almost always have something in place to boost security.

Myth #2: The landlord can enter or lock me out without notice.

Unless you’ve been to court over this, a landlord cannot simply kick you out without notice.  24 hour notice is also required before a landlord is able to enter your apartment.  While they may have a key, that’s only for emergencies and for whatever they may need after you move out.  If you’re worried, check your lease, or discuss this issue before you start renting.

Myth #3: An affordable apartment means it isn’t taken care of.

All apartments are held to the same standards of every other building.  It must be structurally sound, and it must provide heating.  A properly maintained apartment is simply one that follows typical codes for all buildings in your area.  You don’t need to be wary if an apartment is within your price range–the important part is deciding whether or not your prospective apartment is a good fit for you.
