Everything You Need to Know About Changing Your Address

Address Change

To get your address completely changed, you must go through a few different steps.

Once you’re done moving into a new apartment or townhome and all the important stuff is unpacked and set up, there’s one major task left: getting your address changed. It can be easy to overlook, but if you forget about this, it can spell trouble in the long run. Unfortunately, you’re going to need to go to a few places to get your address changed all around, so there’s actually quite a bit that goes into it. Below, we outline just what it takes to get your address changed after moving into a new apartment or townhome.

Hit the Post Office

First, and perhaps most obvious, start with the post office. You can change your address via the Postal Service’s website for a fee, but you can also do this in person at your local post office for free. By doing so, you can set a start date for mail forwarding, but remember that this comes with limitations. Most kinds of mail will still get sent to your new apartment or townhome for a full year, however, magazines and newspapers will only be forwarded for 60 days, so you’ll also want to make sure you go into all of your accounts and manually change the addresses for these types of things.

Let the Government Know

Beyond the postal office, you also need to notify the federal and state governments. The IRS has its own address change form whereas every state has their own processes that can be found online, and in Maryland, it’s as simple as contacting the MVA within 30 days of moving. This can be done via their website, mail, or phone, or you can also head to your local MVA office.

Fill in the Banks

Any of your financial institutions such as loan providers, credit card companies, and your everyday bank should be informed as soon as you can. This is especially important if you’re moving at a time like now, around tax season, because so many important documents need to safely get into your hands.

Cover Your Bases

Finally, while not as urgent, you should also let your employer, any service providers you work with, and your health professionals know of your address change. Everything from insurance companies, to utility providers, to veterinarians, to dentists need to be informed of your new address.
